Students in the Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) utility line program installed 86 pole banners throughout the Kountze community that display area soldiers in commemoration of Memorial Day. The initiative led by the Kountze Chamber of Commerce recognizes those who have served by their name, photo, branch, title and years of service.

“This opportunity means a lot to me,” said Brian Roy, utility line student. “To be able to come out here and give my time through community service and do something that’s valuable to the city of Kountze has been a great experience. I know it makes people feel great pride in their community when they ride through the city and can see the banners.”

The project also provides students with valuable climbing experience in a real-world environment with active traffic. The work is completed in two-person teams, with one student climbing to secure the banner, while the other monitors traffic. This approach helps develop teamwork and prepares students for real job site conditions.

“This is important for our students because it teaches them about community service and giving back to what has been given to them, while providing hands-on work experience,” said Henry Moore, utility line instructor.
