BEAUMONT – Lamar Institute of Technology received 6 Gas Chromatographs from BASF for its new Analyzing Technology program. The addition of these units will provide students with much-needed, hands-on training to better prepare them for their future careers.

Dr. Angela Hill, Provost/Vice President of Instruction, said, “It is with great appreciation that LIT is accepting Gas Chromatographs from BASF. This donation is extremely valuable, not only to the institution, but also to our students who will be enrolled in our new Analyzer program. This hands-on experience will better prepare our students for their future careers.”

Tiffany Williams-Parker, Technology Department Chair, said, “The donation of the Gas Chromatographs are a significant contribution to our students’ education and Analyzer program.  This donation proves how devoted BASF is to our institution and students as we prepare them for the workforce here at LIT.”

According to Chelsea Hoke, Program Director of Instrumentation Technology, “The Gas Chromatographs from BASF will be a huge asset as we start our new Analyzer program at LIT. These units will allow our students and instructors to hit the ground running with instrumental lab training that is relative and applicable to real-world scenarios students will see in the field.”

A chromatography is the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension or as a vapor (as in gas chromatography) through a medium in which the components move at different rates. The Gas Chromatographs that were received analyze hydrocarbons. BASF Analyzer Team Leader Michael McQuerry, said, “We take a sample from the process machines that tell us if we can go in the pipeline or we have a flare-up.”

The donation was the culmination of several years of discussions between LIT and BASF. “We’d rather see them go here than go to waste. After next year, we will have another 35 (available for donation), It will be a two-year process for us as we start replacing older equipment.” David Forrest, BASF Analyzer Specialist, stated.

Enrollment is open for the Analyzing Technology program, scheduled to begin Fall 2022. Visit LIT.edu for more information.
