The Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) Foundation will host the 25th annual A Salute to the Real American Heroes event honoring southeast Texas first responders, veterans and those in active-duty at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2026 at the Beaumont Civic Center, 701 Main Street, Beaumont.

This year’s event will include dinner, a presentation of colors and recognition of scholarship recipients. The program will honor the late Deputy Constable Heather Avery, the late paramedic John Edgar and Beaumont Fire Captain Joseph “Chance” Abercrombie.

“It’s important to honor them because each represents a different example of what it means to serve others and put the safety and well-being of others first,” said Krista Hunter, LIT Executive Director of Development and Foundation.

Uniformed or civilian-clothed first responders, uniformed military personnel and their guests, are invited to attend at no cost with a reservation.

“This event gives us an opportunity each year to recognize and thank the men and women who serve and protect our communities,” said Hunter. “It also allows us to share their stories and make sure their dedication and sacrifices are remembered.”

All proceeds from the event benefit the LIT Foundation and provide scholarships for students pursuing degrees and certifications in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Emergency Medical Technology, Regional Fire Academy and Regional Police Academy at LIT.

“These scholarships help prepare the next generation of first responders and public safety professionals,” said Hunter. “By supporting students in these programs, we are investing in the future of public service and our community.”

Donations and reservations can be made at www.lit.edu/foundation/salute or by mail to the Lamar Institute of Technology Foundation office at PO Box 10085, Beaumont, TX 77710. For more information, contact Krista Hunter at foundation@lit.edu or (409) 839-2956.
