Lamar Institute of Technology’s Workforce and Continuing Education introduces the LaunchPoint Drone Academy, an introductory course designed to prepare students for the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification Exam and provide hands-on experience with drone technology.

“The skills learned in this academy can be applied to careers in many industries,” said Arturo Rodriguez, Coordinator of Continuing Education. “Whether someone is looking to start a new career, add a valuable skill to their current job or explore a personal interest, drone training can open the door to a variety of opportunities.”

The 32-hour course will cover FAA regulations, airspace classification, weather, flight operations, performance factors and safety procedures. Students will also participate in flight simulations and hands-on drone activities to build practical skills and confidence in operating drones.

“Drones are being used in a wide range of industries, including construction, public safety, real estate, agriculture, surveying, utilities and petrochemical operations throughout Southeast Texas,” said Rodriguez. “As the use of drone technology continues to expand, there is a growing need for individuals who can safely and effectively operate drones for both recreational and professional purposes.”

This training will help drone operators understand safety requirements and responsible flight practices, while preparing them for professional applications.

“While drones can be fun and exciting to fly, they also come with important safety and legal responsibilities. Training helps students understand where and how drones can be operated safely, how to avoid potential hazards and how to fly responsibly around people, property and airspace,” said Rodriguez. “It also prepares students for future certification opportunities and professional drone use.”

LaunchPoint Drone Academy is open to beginners as well as individuals seeking to expand their professional skills. The course will meet from 6-8 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays, October 19 through December 5, at LIT’s Workforce and Allied Health Training Center, 855 E. Lavaca St., Beaumont.

The cost is $270. Registration is currently available at https://workforce.lit.edu/courseDisplay.cfm?schID=10058 or by visiting LIT’s Workforce and Continuing Education website. For more information, contact workforcetraining@lit.edu.
