Simulator to Help Train Next Generation of First Responders in Polk County
7/10/2025
The Texas State University System Polk County Center has received delivery of a state-of-the-art mobile ambulance simulator to support Lamar Institute of Technology’s (LIT) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program, made possible through the Texas Workforce Commission’s Rural Training Lab (RTL) Grant received by Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas. The ambulance simulator will serve as a hands-on training tool to prepare participants for EMT certification, helping address the growing demand for emergency medical professionals in Polk County.
“We are extremely grateful for the support from the Texas Workforce Commission,” said Dr. Sid Valentine, LIT President. “This investment reflects a shared commitment to equipping our rural communities with the tools and training they need to be prepared for successful careers.” This initiative is the result of a partnership between Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas, the Texas State University System Polk County Center, and Lamar Institute of Technology. With a grant award of $245,476, the project removes barriers for rural residents by providing local, turnkey training opportunities that respond to the area’s unique workforce needs. In addition to the ambulance simulator, approximately $40,000 in essential medical training supplies were purchased to ensure students have access to hands-on, real-world learning experiences.
“As the fiscal agent for this initiative, Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas is proud to support innovative solutions that directly address the region’s workforce needs,” said Dr. Ty Cauthen, Executive Director of Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas. “The delivery of this ambulance simulator is more than just an equipment drop—it’s an investment in the lives of Polk County residents and the future of emergency response in rural communities.”
The RTL Program was developed to provide short-term, customized training solutions to help rural communities overcome local workforce challenges. This EMT training program exemplifies that mission—meeting a critical demand for first responders while providing residents with accessible, high-quality career pathways in the healthcare field.
