Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) officially debuted Maverick the Eagle, the college’s newly redesigned mascot, at convocation on August 17, 2026.

After years of representing the college, LIT's previous mascot has been retired and replaced with a modernized eagle that better aligns with the college’s brand identity. Along with a brand-new physical suit, Maverick received a refreshed digital design that will be used across marketing materials, student life and community engagement.

"The LIT of today is not the same college it was even a few years ago," said Dr. Sid Valentine, president. "We have defined who we are, experienced incredible growth, invested in our campus, expanded opportunities for students and strengthened our impact across Southeast Texas. It was time for our mascot to reflect that same energy and momentum.”

The name Maverick was selected through a campus-wide voting process that invited students and employees to play a part in the next chapter of LIT tradition. Maverick will bring energy to campus events, community celebrations, student activities and recruitment efforts while creating memorable experiences for future and current students.

"As we continue building the future of LIT, we wanted a mascot that students could rally behind and our community could instantly recognize," Valentine said. "Maverick is a new symbol of LIT pride, and we cannot wait for everyone to meet him."

A “Meet the Mascot” launch party will be held 11 a.m.-3 p.m. August 25 in the quad, where students will receive the opportunity to engage with the mascot, take photos and collect exclusive apparel and swag items. The mascot will also begin to be featured at events starting in the Fall semester. To invite Maverick to your event, contact shargrave@lit.edu.
