Students from the Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) Dental Hygiene Program participated in the Fluoride Varnish Program at Bingman Head Start On February 11, 2026.

The program is a collaborative effort between Beaumont Independent School District, Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and LIT that provides preventive dental services and oral health education to four and five-year-old students.

Through this partnership, children with parental consent received dental examinations conducted by a DSHS dentist, followed by fluoride varnish applications performed by LIT dental hygiene students.

“This event provides valuable preventive care to children while giving our students meaningful insight into community oral health needs,” Dr. Kristina Mendoza, dental hygiene professor, said.

The students also delivered age-appropriate oral health education to help promote healthy dental hygiene habits. The services were supervised by LIT Dental Hygiene faculty, a DSHS dentist and a DSHS dental hygienist to ensure quality care and hands-on clinical training for students.

“This experience reinforced the importance of accessibility to care in reducing dental disease and strengthening public health," said Mendoza. “We are proud to do our part to help expand the access to preventive dental care for young children in our community.”
