Instruction to Industry Externship Program

LIT recognizes the importance of strengthening the connection between education and the evolving needs of the workforce. Employers across Southeast Texas consistently emphasize the demand for applicants who bring both solid academic knowledge and job-ready technical skills. Instructors are essential to closing this gap. By maintaining current, firsthand industry insight, our team can ensure that classroom instruction aligns seamlessly with real-world workforce expectations.

The LIT Teacher Externship Program will offer 40 teachers hands-on externship opportunities through placements at local employers and within LIT's technical programs. K-12 teachers may select an externship in either a regional industry setting or an immersive experience in one of LIT's applied learning programs. Post-secondary instructors will be placed with industry partners to deepen their understanding of workforce needs and emerging technologies.

Each teacher/instructor will complete a 10-day externship and receive a stipend for their participation. The program also provides a stipend for curriculum redesign.

LIT Faculty will conduct their externship during Summer 2026. K-12 teachers will conduct their externship during the Fall 2026 semester.

Activities will include job shadowing, facility tours, interactive demonstrations, and discussions with supervisors, HR teams, and skilled employees. Teachers will develop lesson plans that directly link classroom learning with real-world industry practices.

What to expect:
  • Teachers will gain firsthand knowledge of workplace skills, technologies, and career pathways in high-demand industries.
  • Teachers will receive support in creating new lesson plans that connect classroom content directly to current industry practices.
  • Approximately 1,200 students will benefit from career-aligned instruction that enhances their workforce awareness and readiness.
  • Sustainable partnerships will be strengthened among employers, ISDs, and LIT to ensure ongoing alignment between education and workforce needs.
Deadline to apply is April 17th
