Computer Drafting Technology Certificate

Overview

The Computer Drafting Technology Certificate equips students with the skills needed for entry-level positions in the drafting industry. Students gain hands-on experience creating technical and mechanical drawings using both traditional drafting techniques and AutoCAD 2D/3D software.

This certificate provides a strong technical foundation, equipping graduates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to begin a drafting career and supporting their future professional growth. In addition, all courses completed as part of the certificate are stackable and apply toward the more advanced Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Computer Drafting Technology, allowing students to continue their education seamlessly.

What Will I Learn?

Students in the Drafting program at Lamar Institute of Technology develop a strong foundation in geometric principles, learning how basic shapes and objects serve as the building blocks for all computer-aided design (CAD) work in both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) environments. Through hands-on instruction, students gain experience creating technical drawings and models using industry-standard software such as AutoCAD and Revit. Graduates leave the program with the ability to apply drafting standards and conventions, including the correct use of symbols, line types, line weights, and dimensioning techniques to produce accurate and professional drawings.

An added benefit of the program is that all CAD software used in coursework is available to students at no cost. This allows students to continue developing and refining their skills outside the classroom, giving them additional opportunities to build confidence and prepare for careers in drafting, design, engineering, architecture, and related fields.

What can I do with this Certificate

The Computer Drafting Technology Certificate at Lamar Institute of Technology prepares students for rewarding, high-demand careers in computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting. Graduates gain the foundational CAD knowledge and technical skills needed to pursue entry-level drafting positions across a variety of industries, both locally and worldwide.

This certificate is an excellent option for individuals who already hold a degree in another field and want to quickly gain specialized skills for a new career path in drafting and design. With focused, hands-on training, students can develop the competencies employers seek and enter the workforce with confidence. Best of all, the certificate can be completed in as little as one year, providing a fast and affordable pathway to a new career.
