Medical Assisting – Associate of Applied Science
About the Program
The Medical Assisting program at Lamar Institute of Technology is designed to prepare graduates for successful employment in medical offices, clinics, and other healthcare settings. Students gain hands-on experience and practical skills in administrative and clinical procedures. Graduates are equipped to support physicians and other healthcare professionals by performing a wide range of administrative and clinical tasks.
Program Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:

Degree Requirements
The Medical Assisting A.A.S. degree requires the completion of 60 semester credit hours (SCH).
What Will I Learn?
Students enrolled in the Medical Assisting program will learn how to:
- Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, and handling billing and insurance claims.
- Assist physicians with patient examinations, treatments, and minor surgical procedures.
- Collect and process laboratory specimens and perform basic lab tests.
- Administer medications and perform basic diagnostic procedures, including EKGs.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
- Apply legal and ethical guidelines in a healthcare setting.
- Prepare to sit for a national medical assisting credentialing exam.

Degree Requirements
To earn the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Medical Assisting, students must:
- Complete all required coursework, totaling 60 semester credit hours (SCH).
- Achieve a grade of “C” or better in all courses.
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 throughout the program.
- Satisfy all other graduation requirements as outlined in the LIT Catalog.
