During Black History Month 2024, the LIT community came together to celebrate the rich contributions, achievements and heritage of Black individuals in history.

"Spreading education, showing the community that LIT is proactive in celebrating Black history and all of our combined backgrounds history, is very important to us,” said Monica Pier-Bradley, member of the Celebrating Culture Committee.

Throughout the month, the campus engaged in various Student Government Association-led events and activities that recognize Black History and cultural awareness, including movie screenings of Black Panther I and II, themed painting lessons and a celebration with food, games and a live saxophonist.

"The role of cultural events like our Black History Month celebrations is to foster community unity and inspire positive cultural awareness,” said Ja’Mychael Robertson, SGA President. “From a student perspective, it highlights the contributions of Black men and women to society and fosters a sense of pride and appreciation for one’s own cultural heritage.”

LIT highlighted faculty, staff and students on displays around the campus and social media to celebrate their contributions to the college and to foster an environment where students can see themselves reflected in their peers, instructors and leadership, and inspire them to pursue their goals. This also allows an educational opportunity to recognize and showcase the achievements and influence of black history within American history.

"The significance of Black History Month extends beyond just recognizing past achievements; it serves as a reminder of the ongoing contributions of Black individuals to society,” said Stanley Spooner, Computer Drafting Program Director. “From inventors to engineers, Black history is filled with examples of excellence and innovation. When you start looking at all the Black inventors and engineers in the world, it shows you the impact of black history.”

As Black History Month continues to evolve, LIT remains committed to celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black individuals not only during February but throughout the year.

“The importance of representation cannot be overstated. For students, seeing individuals who look like them in positions of leadership and success is empowering. It reinforces the notion that they too can achieve greatness and make valuable contributions to society,” said Spooner.

By fostering a culture of appreciation, the college ensures that all members of the college community feel valued, supported and empowered to succeed.
