BEAUMONT – Lamar Institute of Technology was named one of the most affordable and cost-effective, accredited online community colleges in Texas for 2019 by the World Scholarship Forum. LIT offers two online associate degrees, an AAS in Health Information Technology and National Security (Homeland Security), and two online certificates in Health Informatics and Homeland Security.

The forum is a “portal for international scholarship opportunities for undergraduates, masters and PhD students,” according to worldscholarshipforum.com.

Community colleges—“especially in Texas—usually offer the cheapest and the best online associate degree,” the site continued. “For this reason, we have deemed it fit to compile 25 Accredited and Cheapest Online Community Colleges in Texas.”
The forum website said, online community colleges provide professional training, continuing education and online certificates in high-level careers, such as health care, medical coding and computer programming.

Currently Texas is home to 126 community colleges, according to the Community College Review. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) claimed in 2017 that associate degree holders earn $124 more per week than professionals who only have a high school diploma. BLS data also shows that those with an associate degree enjoy a lower unemployment rate (3.4%) than workers with only a high school diploma (4.6%).

LIT President Lonnie L. Howard said this latest accolade “is quite an honor, and proves the ROI and long-term value of an education from LIT. We work hard to make sure we offer the people and businesses of Southeast Texas online programs at very competitive rates. This distinction from World Scholarship Forum just validates our efforts.”
