BEAUMONT – Lamar Institute of Technology is offering a host of innovative programs for incoming Fall 2019 students including a new degree and certificate in Graphic Design.

Students may earn an AAS degree (60 hours) or certificate (24 hours) in Graphic Design. Two of the new curriculum courses are Digital Imaging and Design Concepts. Students will learn about image editing software for print and web use. Design Concepts involves the entire design process—from thumbnail sketches to final concept. Upon graduation, these Business Technology students will be prepared to enter the fields of web design, desktop publishing and print design.

An abbreviated 17 hour certificate in Process Technology is being offered by LIT’s Technology Department, in addition to its 60 hour program. The courses are being held days and evenings, with some online, according to Process Operating Program Director Dr. Valerie Worry. This certificate program is primarily for those already employed as process operators who want to further their career, Worry said.

“It is also a way for students to be introduced to the career and then transfer into the AAS” degree program, she added.
A new blended Spanish and ESL course is aimed at helping students who need to learn English within Continuing Education.

The students will be paired with those wanting to learn Spanish to establish a “new trend to hopefully bridge any cultural gaps that exist in the community,” according to CE Coordinator Angela Clark. Course details can be found at: https://workforce.lit.edu/coursedisplay.cfm?schID=3567.

The other CE development is an additional course in Spanish for HealthCare Providers (details here): https://workforce.lit.edu/courseDisplay.cfm?schID=3566.

For Public Service & Safety, Emergency Management and Homeland Security classes include Principles of Basic Emergency Management, Leadership and Effective Communication and Managing Mass Casualty and Fatality Incidents. Anyone interested in pursuing nursing as a career can start out in LIT’s Department of Allied Health & Sciences “at about a third of the cost of a traditional 4 year school,” said R. Peter Whittaker, department chair.
