Lamar Institute of Technology is located near the largest Federal Bureau of Prisons facility in the United States, three Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) prison facilities, a modern direct supervision county jail, and a Texas Youth Commission facility. The Institute, TDCJ and the Federal Bureau of Prisons have combined their resources to meet the growing demands for skilled leaders in the Corrections Industry through a variety of specialized training programs. Wardens, prison employees, and LIT staff assist in the training program. State-of-the-art education and training for career development and continuing education are provided for correctional professionals.

The 200-hour training program for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice is offered three times each year: spring, summer, and fall semesters. In order to accommodate students who may not be able to attend the regularly scheduled day courses, night classes are offered. The sign-up process begins in October for the Spring Academy, February for the Summer I/II Academy, and June for the Fall Academy.

All cadets entering the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Corrections Academy must complete a TDCJ Pre-Employment Application, available in the Technology Center Building, Room 210. They must also successfully pass a five-part examination, an oral interview, and a criminal history check. Cadets must be found eligible for employment by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice before they can enter the Lamar Institute of Technology TDCJ Academy.
