The Business and Computer Information Systems (BCIS) program is designed to prepare the student for entry-level positions in the field of information technology. The degrees under this program are targeted toward developing proficiency in software applications, database administration, computer programming, and Web site development. Students receive extensive hands-on training in using current software and information technology techniques. For the Associate of Applied Science degree, the student will take a core of basic courses and choose one option: Software Development Specialist or Software Support Specialist.
The Software Development Specialist option has courses that are designed to teach programming of business applications and Web site development. Programming languages include Visual Basic, Java, SQL, HTML, C++ and Web authoring packages.
The Software Support Specialist option has courses that are designed to teach fundamentals and integration of the most commonly used business applications. These packages include word processing, spreadsheets, database operations, presentation graphics and basic Web page development. A one-year certificate in Software Support is also offered.
In addition, a one-year certificate in Oracle Database Administration is offered. This certificate is designed to provide the student with a basic understanding of the duties of the Oracle Database Administrator. Courses will assist the graduate in preparation for the Oracle certification exams.
All BCIS major-specific courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. Any BCIS major not earning a grade of “C” or better in attempted major-specific courses will be required to repeat the course. In addition, all BCIS majors must earn a “C” or better in COSC 1301. Additionally, BCIS majors will be required to earn a current certification appropriate for their chosen degree. If a student fails to pass the appropriate certification exam prior to the expected graduation date, the student will have one calendar year to pass the exam and reapply for graduation. A graduate of the two-year instructional program is awarded the Associate of Applied Science degree. Completing both options will not result in two associate degrees.
