Diagnostic Medical Sonography

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program prepares health professionals to function in a medical office, clinic or hospital as medical sonographers. The diagnostic medical sonographer provides patient services using medical ultrasound under the supervision of a physician responsible for the use and interpretation of ultrasound procedures.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) program administered by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC/DMS).

The number of students accepted into the program is limited to space available in clinical agencies.

Individuals interested in enrolling in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program must apply to the program. Diagnostic Medical Sonography admission forms, criteria and admission procedures are available from the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or by visiting www.lit.edu/. Applications are due by April 1st of each year.  Admission to the program is based upon academic success. Applicants must pass all sections of the COMPASS® or an approved alternative test. Those failing one or more sections must reapply one year later during the normal admission times. Applicants selected to enroll in the program will begin classes in Summer I Semester.

A minimum grade of “C” must be earned in all courses required for graduation listed on the degree plan. Students successfully completing the program will be awarded the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Applicants may obtain additional information relating to the program by contacting the program director.

Graduates of an associate degree in a health field may complete an Advanced Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The advanced certificate is designed to allow health care professionals an opportunity to learn the knowledge and skills to become a medical sonographer.

Upon completion of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program and the Advanced Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, students will be eligible to take examinations for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification in the specialty area of Abdomen and Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN).

The number of students accepted into the program is limited to space available in clinical agencies.
