This program of study prepares health professionals to function in a medical office, clinic or hospital as
medical sonographers. The diagnostic medical sonographer provides patient services using medical ultrasound
under the supervision of a physician responsible for the use and interpretation of ultrasound procedures.
This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs
(CAAHEP) program administered by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical
Sonography (JRC/DMS).
The number of students accepted into the program is limited to space available in clinical agencies. Diagnostic
Medical Sonography admission forms, criteria and admission procedures are available from the Diagnostic Medical
Sonography Program Director, Multi-Purpose Center or by visiting www.lit.edu/. Applications are due by April 15 of
each year; classes begin in Summer Semester I. Admission to the program is based upon academic success. Applicants must pass all sections of the COMPASS®, THEA or an approved alternative test. Those failing
one or more sections must reapply one year later during the normal admission times.
A minimum grade of “C” must be earned in all courses required for graduation listed on the degree plan. Students
successfully completing the program will be awarded the Associate of Applied Science degree in Diagnostic Medical
Sonography. Applicants may obtain additional information relating to the program by contacting the program director.
Also available to graduates of an accredited 2-year patient care Allied Health program is an Advanced Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Upon completion of these programs, students will be eligible to take examinations for the American Registry of
Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification in the specialty area of Abdomen and Obstetrics/Gynecology
(OB/GYN).
