LIT process operating students begin 48-hour run of distillation unit

BEAUMONT – Lamar Institute of Technology process operating technology students began their 48-hour unit run of LIT’s three-story distillation unit at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 9.

They will run the unit until noon on Dec. 11. This project is the final grade for the process technology operations class. Students work in shifts, wear all the appropriate safety gear and perform all tasks on the unit, much like they would do in an actual chemical plant or refinery.

Besides handling the routine work of running a unit, each shift of students also had to deal with an obstacle during their time on the unit. The goal is to give each student real-life experience so that they can apply what they’ve learned in the classroom.
